[June 21, 2025, Macau] Co-created by MGM and renowned filmmaker Zhang Yimou, the residency show Macau 2049 was awarded the 2024 Weibo Cultural Tourism IP Award at the 2025 “Weibo Travel Night” earlier. This another significant milestone for Macau 2049 not only affirms its continued breakthroughs in the sector of cultural tourism communication, but also enhances its active role in building Macau as “a base for exchange and cooperation where Chinese culture is the mainstream and diverse cultures coexist”.
Since its debut, Macau 2049 has embraced the creative concept of “intangible cultural heritage + technology”, to integrate cutting-edge technologies such as Air Fountain, AI, and biomimetic robots with eight forms of Chinese intangible cultural heritage—Hua’er, Khoomei, Song and Dance of The Miao People, Peking Opera, Yangge, Yi Song, Lion Dance and Storytelling in North Shaanxi. By blending tradition with modernity, Macau 2049 allows the audience to enjoy an immersive performance that transcends boundaries and time, while redefining the younger generation’s understanding of traditional Chinese culture. Moreover, it leverages Weibo’s advantages as a social platform to spark widespread user-generated creations and discussions, becoming a leading example of innovation in cultural tourism content.
Catarina Lio, the Executive Producer of Macau 2049, delivered a speech at the 2025 “Weibo Travel Night” titled “Technology Empowers Innovation in Cultural Tourism Communication”. She said, “Macau 2049 is not just a performance—it’s a cultural exploration driven by curiosity. In Macau, a city of just 33 square kilometers, we leverage technology as a bridge to combine eight forms of Chinese intangible cultural heritages with cutting-edge technologies. By collaborating with social platforms like Weibo, we adopted youth-oriented and market-savvy approaches to encourage curiosity and engagement with intangible cultural heritage, transforming the performance into a continuously evolving cultural phenomenon. Looking ahead, we plan to launch an art-themed holiday travel route around MGM’s attractions, aiming to boost high-quality development of Macau’s cultural tourism, while showcasing Macau and China's charm to the world.”
The 2025 “Weibo Travel Night,” hosted by Sina Weibo, focused on “cultural tourism communication power” and “IP content power”. It is an annual flagship event of China’s cultural tourism content and serves as a key indicator of brand marketing effectiveness in the sector. Previously, Macau 2049 also received the 6th China Cultural Tourism Pioneer Award from the China Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (CAAPA), continuously expanding Chinese culture’s influence on the global stage.
