MGM presents the latest monumental installation “Valkyrie Miss Dior” by renowned contemporary Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos as part of the collateral exhibition for "Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023". The masterpiece is the latest artwork in the Valkyrie series, following the limited time appearances at the Dior autumn-winter 2023-2024 Ready-to-Wear show in Paris and Shenzhen, MGM COTAI is proud to be the first stage to present the artwork to the public.
Inspired by Valkyrie in the Norse mythology, the powerful and brave feminine figures, the artwork is crafted in an organic form and interacting harmoniously with the architecture. Measuring 24 meters long and 7 meters tall, the artwork is meticulously crafted using various handcraft techniques such as sewing, knitting, crochet, and composed of vibrant fabrics, lace, embroidery, sequins, feather, LED lights and more materials. With the use of over 20 floral mottled fabrics inspired by the house’s archives of the brand, it pays homage to Miss Dior’s flowers and to the splendor of nature so dear to the founding-couturier, as well as tribute to extraordinary women. Through its intricate and amorphous structure, the free-form artwork is a dynamic sculptural dance, sensory and interactive, honoring creative freedom in an almost touchable way. It is luxurious, full of light and movement, offering an immersive and engaging experience.
2024 marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Portugal. This exhibition is the latest edition of MGM’s World Art Exchange Program, solidify Macau as a gateway for Sino-Portuguese culture through Art. In 2015, Joana Vasconcelos created the site-specific installation art “Valkyries Octopus” especially for MGM MACAU, which is the largest work in the Valkyrie series. The Valkyrie Octopus is sailing off from Macau for exhibition in Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology in Lisbon between September 2023 to March 2024, serving as a cultural ambassador that facilitate China-Portugal exchanges.
The magnificent installation has transformed the Spectacle into an upscale fashion runway celebrating creative freedom. Perfectly resonating with the artistic public space of MGM, it showcases the charm of art and fashion collaboration. It is an exceptional multi-sensory feast immersing the audiences in a magical world, unleashing creativity through arts in Macau.
