The two major events of “Lion Dance Heritage in Porto-A-Ma” – “10th Lion Dance Championship 2023 - MGM Cup” and “MGM Lion Dance Festival” will take place in the Porto-A-Ma area from September 23 to October 7. The innovative inheritance of the Lingnan lion dance culture has been integrated into the life experience with a series of international cultural and sports activations at the World Heritage site.
The indicative international event in the lion dance scene “Lion Dance International Championship” has reached its 10th milestone. This year, the event has been revamped and elevated to the “International Lion Dance Championship – MGM Cup” and will take place at the Barra Square in front of A-Ma Temple for the first time. The unique event is co-organized by MGM and the Dragon & Lion Dances Federation of Asia, advised by the Chinese Dragon and Lion Dance Sports Association and coordinated by the Wushu General Association of Macau. On October 6 and 7, southern lion dance troupes from 12 countries and regions will converge to compete for the highest honor in a series of invigorating events, which will be kicked off with a Lion Parade and Opening Ceremony.

Macau's first "Lion Dance Festival" immerse locals and tourists into a unique cultural experience during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays through an organic combination of Chinese intangible cultural heritage and Macau's World Heritage site. With the theme of “Lingnan Lion Dance Culture”, the festival features thematic exhibitions, showcase of intangible cultural heritage lion head and drum making craftsmanship, lion dance workshops and a wide range of programs. Through the workshops featuring the art of paper crafting, an intangible cultural heritage of the Foshan ancient town, participants will experience "painting" and "decorating" of the four major production processes through simple handicrafts.
Organized by MGM, jointly curated with Dragon & Lion Dance Federation of Foshan and technically supported by Foshan Liansheng, the festival embodies the cultural homogeneity and fosters the cross-border collaboration in cultural tourism between Macau and Foshan, allowing locals and international travelers of different backgrounds to experience the Lingnan traditional culture from various perspectives.
