What does it take to pass the lion dance on to the next generation? The thunderous drums, the ornate headdress, the precise footwork? Macau contemporary artist Nicole Ng believes there is something quieter woven into every seam: memory. A worn garment once carried someone's warmth, their days. For Ng, that memory is itself a doorway into cultural continuity.
Strength and Softness, Woven as One
“Strength and softness may seem worlds apart, but to me, they are one,” says Nicole Ng. The lion's frame embodies strength; each worn garment carries warmth and memory. Wrapping layers of reclaimed fabric around the structure, Ng softens its contours while preserving the lion's indomitable presence.
"It's not a clash between strength and softness—it's softness transforming strength."
Sustainability as Emotional and Cultural Continuity
Nicole collects old clothes from friends, family, even strangers—each garment having accompanied someone through a chapter of life before being cut into strips. "Sustainability, to me, isn't just about reusing waste. It's about extending emotion and culture forward." In an age of fast fashion, these garments—rewoven into the lion—are given new life.
From a Distance, a Lion. Up Close, a Life.
Nicole Ng hopes viewers will pause for a closer look. From afar, a lion stands vivid and majestic. Up close, denim twill, cotton weave, and the stitching of a once-loved garment come into view.
The moment she hopes to leave with her audience is simple: everyday things can become extraordinary. This lion was not shaped by one artist alone. Every donated garment carries a story, and each contributor becomes part of its rebirth.

For Ng, MGM is where contemporary luxury and Lingnan heritage naturally converge. Here, worn fabric meets the lion's frame: one shaped by craftsmanship and grandeur, the other by memory, warmth, and the traces of daily life. On a single lion head, they find harmony. MGM goes beyond showcasing lion dance culture, bringing together inheritors, artists, and the public to explore its next possibility.
