"I use burned pieces of paper and ashes from burning to construct my work. From destroying to rebirth, life runs a circle." Xue Song is a key figure in Chinese contemporary pop art, known for blending traditional elements like calligraphy and ink painting with modern techniques. After a fire destroyed his studio in 1990, he began incorporating ashes from past works into his art as a form of reflection. “Burning” and “collaging” have since become his signature artistic style. The Eight Views of Macau features eight works created during Xue Song’s special trip to Macau, depicting landmarks such as Ruins of St. Paul’s and A-Ma Temple, etc. Using local newspapers and magazines turned into symbolic ashes, Xue weaves personal impressions and shared memories into vivid, layered stories of the city.
