“Dancing Lights was the most powerful manifestation of my vigour and energy, a convergence of my experience and my philosophy of life. During the entire process, I was at once creating and experiencing epiphanies, which ultimately sublimated me to another realm.”
——Hsiao Chin
Hsiao Chin was a key figure in post-war cultural emissary between East and West. In the 1960s, he founded the Punto Movement in Milan — “Punto” meaning “point” in Italian. Philosophically, it represents both the origin and end of all things; artistically, it evolves into lines, surfaces, and forms. The “Punto” became a recurring symbol in his work.
""The Dance of Light"" series reflects Hsiao’s interest in Taoist philosophy and his signature motif of the circle and square, symbolizing the sky and the earth. Inspired by the ""Tao Te Ching"", Zen Buddhism, and the thoughts of Chuang Tzu, the series explores a return to the source of life. Straight and curved lines represent the spiritual and material worlds, while geometric forms express cosmic balance.
Bold brushstrokes express the “Qi” flowing through the cosmos, interacting with splashes of orange and green to create a vibrant, cyclical composition. Blending Eastern philosophy with Western aesthetics, this piece marks a milestone in Hsiao’s career — his largest painting to date, with both academic and market significance. A documentary, Dance of Light 2016, was also produced to celebrate the opening of MGM Cotai in Macau.
