WELCOME TO OUR MGM SUSTAINABILITY NEWSLETTER
We’re doing a lot behind the scenes at MGM to reduce our impact on the environment and support the people that mean the most to us, including all our employees and community. Contributing to a better Macau through our arts and culture program is also an important aspect of our approach. Through this newsletter we will share our monthly sustainability highlights with you, and hope you will join us in our sustainability programs to help us Create a Better Tomorrow Today.
Culinary Mentoring Program at Astor Shore: Over the course of 10 weeks, a team of MGM chefs have been giving their time to mentor a group of young mentees from Astor Shore, an organization dedicated to supporting adolescent girls in the Macau community, to help them gain skills, and build confidence and self-esteem. Chef Wilson, MGM’s Executive Sous Chef, has been supporting our complimentary and meaningful Culinary Mentoring Program since 2013. Sharing his passion for food and the community, Chef Wilson hopes to connect with young people and inspire them to reach for their dreams. “It’s a fun and energetic environment. I’m proud to see how they have grown in confidence throughout the program, whilst building strong friendships with each other,” said Chef Wilson.
Congratulations to our newest MGM Community Hairdressers! To continue our monthly hairdresser service for senior citizens in Macau, our second round of Golden Lion Hairdresser Training concludes on June 17.
21 new hairdressers will now join the Golden Lion Hairdresser Team to provide monthly new haircuts, as well as fun and friendship, to local community organizations.
Second Junior Lion Dance Training Program starts in July! Once again we are partnering with Macau Hong Wai Sports and Recreations Association to hold the summer Junior Lion Dance Training Program for children aged 5-10. Following its overwhelming success in 2015, this unique 8-week training program (July-August) aims to pass on the culture and tradition of this Chinese sport to local young generations.
Food Safety Seminar: We hosted the “MGM SME Food Safety Seminar” on June 7, 2016 in collaboration with the Macao Chamber of Commerce, supported by the Macao Economic Services, Macau Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau, Macau Productivity and Technology Transfer Center, and Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute. Attended by more than 300 participants, the event marks the very first food safety seminar jointly organized by the private and public sectors of Macau.
The objective of this Seminar is to give local SME suppliers in the food and beverage industry a platform to learn about the Food Safety Law and international standards in the purchasing process raised by both the government and the local integrated resort operators in order to enhance their competitiveness. Food and beverage is an integral part of the overall traveling experience that helps make Macau a world tourism and leisure center; the seminar helps local SMEs better understand and follow international food safety standards, which will enhance Macau’s attractiveness as a tourism destination on an international level.
Energy Saving Week: This year’s Energy Saving Week lasts between June 12 and 18. Once again we have joined the Macau Office for the Development of the Energy Sector to help raise awareness of the importance of saving energy so that we can help protect the environment and create a better Macau by reducing pollution from energy consumption and improving our air quality. To raise awareness we organized a “lights off” event on June 13 and our team joined together for Casual Wear Day on June 14 to promote wearing cooler clothing and keeping our air-cons at acceptable levels during summer.
However, it’s important to remember that energy saving week, should be every week. We only have one home, planet earth, let’s do all we can to protect it!
Recycling revolution at F&B: Our kitchens and outlets are saying NO to unnecessary waste and rolling out a comprehensive campaign for waste reduction. New recycling bins and a reinvigorated push to recycle more – thank you to F&B for keeping our kitchens and restaurants green!
Dragon Boat Team reaches new heights: Over the past 12 months, our Dragon Boat Team, consisting of athletes from across different departments, have trained tirelessly to prepare for the Annual Dragon Boat Competition in Macau on June 4, 5, and 9. Congratulations to our women’s team who is the Champion in local boat race, third place in the international race, and also to our men’s team that ranked in top five in both races.
The three-day Dragon Boat Races proves our Golden Lion team spirit! Thank you our cheerleading squad, our management team and all Golden Lion team members for your enthusiasm and support to the rowers throughout the races! Lastly, thank you to our Dragon Boat team for all your hard work, and we are so proud of you!
Health Campaign: MGM’s “Golden Lion Health Campaign”, promoting the importance of work-life balance, as well as living a fit and healthy lifestyle at work and at home has come to a close. Over the course of the campaign, almost 10,000 employees and their family members joined a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, which included a family trail hiking event, Chinese medical consultations, the expert-led “Say Goodbye to Insomnia!” roadshow, an acupressure point massage workshop, healthy eating seminar and a healthy meal program in the employee dining room.
Thank you for giving blood: A sincere thanks to the 64 people who showed to give blood on May 20, on the behalf of the Macao Blood Transfusion Service, thank you for your caring action.
